Laura Jocic on Sergey Tychina & Vyacheslav Akhunov

Assistant Curator, Australian Fashion and Textiles, National Gallery of Victoria Laura Jocic presents an illustrated talk on the cultural context for the two works by Uzbekistan artists Sergey Tychina and Vyacheslav Akhunov. The locations for the works are the fabled Silk Road cities of Bukhara and Samarkand, now in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Laura, who regularly leads cultural tours to Uzbekistan, will look at the history and the architecture of the region and how this informs the interpretation of the works and discuss her meeting with Sergey last year in Tashkent.

Auckland based artist and poet John Pule is perhaps best known for his use of the aesthetics of Hiapo (Niuean tapa cloth) in his paintings. Land and identity are key concepts in Pule's work. He fuses reference from the traditional art and history of his birth country with his personal experiences as a Niuean living in New Zealand. John discusses his most recent work produced specifically for the exhibition.
